Characteristics of the cityLocation: Meru is a city in eastern Kenya on the northeast slopes of Mount Kenya. It has a cool subtropical highland climate with an average temperature of 24°C. The average population of Meru county is approximately 240, 900 residents. Meru County is a hotspot for tourism with a jumping-off place for Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves and Lewa Conservancy, Ngare Ndare Forest, Lake Ellis, Meru National Park, to the northeast of Meru, via Maua in the Nyambene Hills. Year of establishmentEstablished in 1979 as Meru College of Technology (MECOTECH). In 2008, the Government of Kenya converted MECOTECH into a University and named it Meru University College of Science and Technology (MUCST). It was established through Legal Notice No. 103 of 18th July 2008 as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST) was established as a full-fledged University following the Award of Charter on 1st March, 2013.
Feature of the universityThe university is a newly established university, which became independent of the other university in 2013. The University has three campuses, Main Campus (Nchiiru, Meru), Town Campus (Meru Town) and Marimba Campus. The vision for the University is to be a world class University of Science and Technology. The University endeavours to provide quality education, training and research in Science, Technology and innovation. The University has Eight (8) Schools where its strength lies; Pure & Applied Sciences, Agriculture & Food Science, Engineering & Architecture, Health Sciences, Nursing, Computing & Informatics, Business & Economic and, Education.
Number of studentsThe University has over 10,000 Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate Students.
Departments with unique featuresThe University boosts of an Innovation, Incubation & Entrepreneurship Centre where students and faculty are encouraged to innovate and patent new ideas and mentored to be entrepreneurs. Aside from that, each Department has its own unique characteristics with dedicated faculty, state of the art equipment, research and advanced technology, each with a purpose to edify our students into goal-oriented and self-reliant graduates. Apart from academics the University has assorted co-curricular activities.
Availability of dormitories for international studentsHostels (dormitories) are available within the University and also rentals are available outside the University.
Existence of Japanese studentsCurrently, no Japanese students has been admitted to the University.
